The Disappearance and Death of Santiago Maldonado
Santiago Maldonado, a 28-year-old craftsman and activist, disappeared on 1 August 2017 in Cushamen, Chubut province, after the Gendarmerie broke up a Mapuche road blockade over land owned by the Benetton group. His disappearance fuelled debate in Argentina about "forced disappearance", and the question "Where is Santiago Maldonado?" was carried into mass demonstrations. On 17 October 2017 his body was found in the Chubut River. An autopsy with 55 experts concluded that he had died of drowning and hypothermia, with no signs of violence. The judge closed the case in November 2018, but the family appealed and in September 2019 the appeals court overturned the decision and ordered the investigation reopened.
