KINGSTON — 2010 · Major Tragedy

The Tivoli Gardens Incursion

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

In May 2010 about 800 soldiers and 370 police officers entered the impoverished Tivoli Gardens district of West Kingston to capture a gang leader wanted by the United States on drug and arms trafficking charges. A state of emergency was declared in Kingston and St. Andrew. Days of fighting left around 73 people dead, at least 70 of them civilians, and hundreds detained. The wanted man was caught in June 2010, extradited to the US and sentenced to 23 years in 2012. An independent commission of enquiry convened in 2014 found the operation poorly planned and identified possible extrajudicial killings.
