PARIS — 1991 · Serial Murder
The "East Paris Killer" Case
Between 1991 and 1997 seven young women were killed in the eastern districts of Paris, particularly around the Bastille. The DNA profile recovered from the crime scenes was designated "SK1" (serial killer number one), and for a long time investigators treated the apartment and car-park killings as separate cases. In March 1998 a comparison with a blood sample taken during an earlier, unrelated inquiry produced a match, and the killer was arrested at Place Blanche in Montmartre on 26 March 1998. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 5 April 2001. The case became a landmark in French debate over DNA in serial-crime investigations.
