PORT SAID — 2012 · Major Tragedy
Port Said Stadium Disaster
After an Al Masry–Al Ahly match in Port Said on 1 February 2012, home supporters stormed the pitch and the away stand. In the violence and crush that followed, 74 people died and more than 500 were injured, most of them Al Ahly fans. Witnesses said exit gates were locked and security forces failed to intervene. After Egypt's deadliest football disaster, the league was suspended for two years. In January 2013, 21 defendants were sentenced to death; a retrial handed down 11 death sentences, and two police officials were jailed. The Court of Cassation upheld 10 death sentences in 2017.
