OSLO — 2011 · Major Tragedy
The 22 July Attacks — Oslo and Utøya
On 22 July 2011 a far-right attacker first killed eight people with a car bomb outside government buildings in Oslo. Disguised as a police officer, he then went to Utøya island, where the Labour Party youth wing was holding its summer camp, and killed 69 people, most of them young. In all 77 people died, the deadliest event in Norway since the Second World War. In August 2012 he was sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention, the maximum and extendable sentence. An independent commission also criticised the speed of the police response.
