Reina Nightclub Attack

In the first hours of 1 January 2017, during New Year celebrations, a gunman attacked the Reina nightclub in Ortaköy, Istanbul. Thirty-nine people, many of them foreign nationals and including a police officer, were killed and 79 injured. ISIS claimed the attack; the gunman was captured in Istanbul 16 days later. The trial of 59 defendants concluded on 7 September 2020 with the gunman sentenced to 40 terms of aggravated life imprisonment. The regional appeals court upheld the verdicts for 47 defendants, and the Court of Cassation confirmed the gunman's sentence.
