MINSK — 2011 · Suspicious Death
The Minsk Metro Bombing
During the evening rush hour on 11 April 2011 a bomb exploded at Kastrychnitskaya interchange station on the Minsk metro. Fifteen people were killed and hundreds injured in the deadliest terrorist attack in Belarusian history. Authorities quickly detained two young men. In November 2011 a court sentenced both to death, and the sentences were carried out in March 2012. Human rights groups questioned the speed of the trial, the circumstances of the confessions and the reliability of the evidence, and the European Union condemned the executions. The true motive behind the attack remains disputed.
