GONESSE — 2000 · Major Tragedy
Concorde Crash
On 25 July 2000 Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde bound from Paris Charles de Gaulle to New York, crashed onto a hotel in Gonesse about two minutes after take-off. All 109 people on board and 4 people on the ground were killed. According to the investigation, a titanium strip that had fallen onto the runway from an earlier aircraft burst a tyre; flying debris ruptured a fuel tank in the wing and the leaking fuel ignited. At a 2010 trial an airline and one of its mechanics were found criminally responsible, but in 2012 an appeal court overturned those convictions while civil liability for compensation remained. The Concorde fleet was retired in 2003.
