The Khorava Street Murders
On 1 December 2017 an argument between students at a school in central Tbilisi escalated into a fight involving dozens of young people on Khorava Street outside the school. Two 16-year-old students were fatally stabbed. In May 2018 a court convicted one defendant over one student's death but issued a partial acquittal that left the other death not fully resolved, triggering days of street protests in Tbilisi and the resignation of the Chief Prosecutor. Parliament set up an inquiry commission. In 2019 the appeals court ruled that one of the killings remained partly unsolved, and in February 2020 a man was sentenced to 15 years for the premeditated murder of the second student.
