KAZAN — 2011 · Serial Murder
The "Volga Maniac" Case
Between March 2011 and October 2012, elderly women living alone were killed in their homes in 15 Russian cities, including Kazan, Ufa, Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow. The killer gained entry by posing as a maintenance worker and then took valuables; the press called him the "Volga Maniac". The crimes went unsolved for years. In December 2020 a suspect who had once worked as a locksmith in Kazan was detained and confessed to many of the killings. In March 2024 a court found him guilty of murdering 31 elderly women and assaulting 33 others, and sentenced him to life in prison. It is one of Russia's largest serial murder cases of recent times.
