BRUMADINHO — 2019 · Major Tragedy
The Brumadinho Dam Collapse
On 25 January 2019 a tailings dam at mining company Vale's Córrego do Feijão mine near Brumadinho suddenly collapsed. Millions of cubic metres of mud buried the company's offices, canteen and communities downstream within minutes, killing more than 270 people, most of them mine workers. Workers said they had warned of risks at the dam. In January 2020 Vale, the dam's auditor TÜV Süd and 16 individuals were charged with homicide and environmental crimes. In February 2021 Vale signed a settlement of about $7 billion with the state of Minas Gerais; the criminal case continues.
