The Murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi
Juan Gerardi, auxiliary bishop of Guatemala City, was killed in the garage of the San Sebastián parish house on 26 April 1998, two days after presenting 'Guatemala: Nunca Más' (REMHI), a report documenting human rights abuses during the civil war. The report attributed most atrocities of the 36-year conflict to the army. In June 2001 a civilian court sentenced three military men to 30 years each and a priest to 20 years as an accomplice, a landmark case in which soldiers were tried in a civilian court. Pope Francis declared Gerardi a martyr in 2020.
