The Giulio Regeni case

UnsolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

In January 2016, 28-year-old Italian academic Giulio Regeni, who was conducting doctoral research in Egypt, disappeared; days later his body was found near Cairo. The case caused serious diplomatic tension between Italy and Egypt. Italian prosecutors filed charges against four Egyptian security officials, but the trial was suspended for a long period because the defendants failed to appear and Egyptian authorities declined to cooperate. An Italian parliamentary commission concluded that responsibility for the case lay with the Egyptian state. The case was never brought to a legal conclusion.
