Christchurch Mosque Attacks

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 15 March 2019, during Friday prayers, an Australian far-right gunman attacked the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch and then the Linwood Islamic Centre. Fifty-one people were killed and dozens injured, the deadliest attack in New Zealand's modern history. Led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the country banned military-style semi-automatic weapons within a month. The attacker pleaded guilty to all charges in March 2020 and in August 2020 became the first person in the country's history to be sentenced to life without parole. The Royal Commission of Inquiry report was published in December 2020.
