JINDO — 2014 · Major Tragedy
Sewol Ferry Disaster
On 16 April 2014 the ferry Sewol, sailing from Incheon to Jeju Island, capsized and sank off Jindo. Most of the 304 people who died were high school students on a school trip. While passengers were told to stay in their cabins, the captain and some crew abandoned ship. The captain was sentenced to 36 years in 2014; in 2015 an appeals court ruled that leaving without ordering an evacuation amounted to homicide by wilful negligence and raised the sentence to life. Crew members and executives of the operating company were also jailed. The disaster prompted a deep national reckoning over safety oversight and crisis response.
