Karadon Mine Disaster

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 17 May 2010, a firedamp explosion about 540 metres underground at the Karadon mine of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprise killed 30 miners. The case at the Zonguldak 2nd High Criminal Court opened in December 2011, and six expert reports were commissioned. When it concluded in 2014, five defendants, including enterprise managers, were sentenced to between 5 and 10 years in prison and 23 were acquitted. The Court of Cassation later overturned some of the convictions, ruling that the sentences should have been converted into fines.
