Likouala region, Republic of the Congo (cryptozoological legend)

Mokele-mbembe

Folklore — not a documented case

A long-necked, elephant-sized water monster is said to live in the swamps of the Congo Basin. Despite many expeditions, no evidence has been found.

The Likouala region in the north of the Republic of the Congo is home to one of the world's largest and least accessible swamp forests. At its heart lies Lake Tele, a round, shallow lake. This remote landscape is known as the home of Africa's most famous cryptozoological legend, Mokele-mbembe.
