Silves, Portugal — Algarve (folk tale)

The Enchanted Moura of Silves Castle

Folklore — not a documented case

In the great cistern of the castle at Silves, the old capital of the Algarve, an enchanted Moorish princess is said to appear in a silver boat on St John's Night.

Silves is a historic town in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, and was one of the important cities of the Islamic period in the Middle Ages. Its red sandstone castle is among the best-preserved Islamic-era buildings in the region. Inside the castle is a large cistern that supplied the town with water in times of siege; locally it is known as the “Cistern of the Enchanted Moura”.
