The 1855 Bursa Earthquake

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 28 February 1855, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of about 7.5, centred near present-day Mustafakemalpaşa, struck Bursa, the former Ottoman capital. Around 300 people were killed, and a fire that broke out after the shaking burned some 3,000 houses in the city. Many historic buildings, notably the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), were damaged. On 11 April 1855 a second major earthquake of magnitude 7.0 followed, killing about 1,300 people, mainly in the area between Gemlik and Mudanya. Remembered locally as the "little apocalypse", the sequence profoundly changed Bursa's urban fabric; damaged mosques and inns were repaired by the Ottoman authorities in the following years.
