GIBSLAND — 1934 · Murder
The Final Ambush of Bonnie and Clyde
During the Great Depression, the gang led by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow carried out robberies of small stores, petrol stations and banks, kidnappings and killings across the central US between 1932 and 1934. The gang is believed to have been responsible for at least 12 deaths, at least nine of them police officers. Romanticised by the press, the pair were tracked by a six-man Texas-Louisiana posse led by former Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. On the morning of 23 May 1934 they were ambushed on a rural road near Gibsland in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, and died in their car under heavy gunfire. The episode became one of the emblems of the 'public enemy' era.
