VIÑA DEL MAR — 1981 · Serial Murder
The Viña del Mar Psychopaths
Between August 1980 and November 1981, ten people were killed in and around Viña del Mar, most of them at night in isolated places. The killings caused great fear in the coastal city, and the press dubbed the perpetrators "the Viña del Mar Psychopaths". On 8 March 1982 two members of the Carabineros police were arrested; it emerged that both had been discharged from the force only days earlier. The court sentenced both to death. The two were executed by firing squad on 29 January 1985. These were the last executions carried out in Chile; the country abolished the death penalty for civilian crimes in 2001.
