SAGAMIHARA — 2016 · Major Tragedy
The Tsukui Yamayuri-en Care Home Attack
On the night of 26 July 2016 a former employee entered the Tsukui Yamayuri-en care home for disabled people in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. Nineteen people were killed and 26 injured. The attacker soon handed himself in at a nearby police station; his discriminatory views about disabled people became central to the investigation. On 16 March 2020 the Yokohama District Court found him criminally responsible and sentenced him to death; the sentence became final when he withdrew his appeal. It was one of the deadliest mass attacks in post-war Japan and started a national debate about disability rights and the structure of care institutions.
