TRIPOLI — 1978 · Missing Person
Disappearance of Imam Musa Sadr
Lebanese Shia cleric Imam Musa Sadr travelled to Libya as an official guest in August 1978, accompanied by a cleric and a journalist. All three vanished after last being seen in Tripoli in the final days of August. Libyan authorities said the delegation had flown to Rome, but Italian inquiries showed the three never reached Italy. Decades of investigation in Lebanon have produced no definitive answer; Sadr's fate and the whereabouts of his remains are still unknown. The disappearance permanently strained relations between Lebanon and Libya and is commemorated in Lebanon every year.
