Sam Sheppard case

UnsolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

On 4 July 1954, Marilyn Sheppard, the pregnant wife of doctor Sam Sheppard, was beaten to death in their home in Ohio. Sheppard claimed he had struggled with an unknown intruder and was convicted of second-degree murder in 1954. Ruling that the press coverage had violated his right to a fair trial, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1966; at the retrial, Sheppard was acquitted. The case inspired the television series "The Fugitive"; the real perpetrator was never identified.
