The Jersey Devil
Folklore — not a documented case
A hooved, bat-winged creature with a horse's head is said to roam New Jersey's Pine Barrens; legend says it was born under a curse in 1735.
In southern New Jersey, the Pine Barrens, known for their sandy soil and dense pine forests, are considered the home of one of America's most famous local monsters. According to the tales, the Jersey Devil walks on two legs, has hooves, bat-like wings and the head of a horse or goat, and lets out a shrill, blood-curdling scream.
