EVEREST — 1924 · Missing Person
The Disappearance of Mallory and Irvine on Everest
George Mallory and Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine, members of the 1924 British Everest expedition, set out on 8 June 1924 for a final summit attempt via the Northeast Ridge. Their teammate Noel Odell glimpsed them through the clouds around midday, climbing towards the summit; they were never seen again. Whether they reached the top, 29 years before the first confirmed ascent, became one of the great questions of mountaineering history. Mallory's body was found by a research expedition on 1 May 1999 at about 8,160 metres. In 2024 a National Geographic team found remains believed to be Irvine's. But the camera the pair are known to have carried has never been found, and the question remains unanswered.
