SAN VICENTE — 1908 · Suspicious Death
The Last Stand of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Fleeing Pinkerton detectives in the United States, outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid settled first in Argentina and then in Bolivia. In November 1908, after a mining company's payroll was robbed near Tupiza, two foreigners were recognised in the small Andean mining village of San Vicente. The pair took refuge in a house and a gunfight broke out with local soldiers and police; the next morning two bodies were found inside. Most historians accept that they were Cassidy and Sundance, but the identification was never conclusively proven. An exhumation in the village cemetery turned up the remains of someone else, so the debate continues.
