CEBU — 1997 · Missing Person
The Chiong Sisters Case
On the evening of 16 July 1997 in Cebu City, sisters Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong, aged 20 and 23, disappeared while waiting for a ride outside a shopping mall after work. Two days later a woman's body was found at the bottom of a ravine in Carcar; the family accepted it as Marijoy, though the identification remained disputed. Jacqueline was never found. In 2004 the Supreme Court of the Philippines sentenced seven defendants to death; when the death penalty was abolished in 2006, the sentences became life imprisonment. One convict was transferred to Spain in 2009 to serve his sentence. The case remains disputed over the reliability of evidence, and early releases in 2019 caused an outcry.
