PUERTO PLATA — 1960 · Murder
The Murder of the Mirabal Sisters
Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, known as "the Butterflies" and leading figures of the 14th of June Movement against the Trujillo dictatorship, were stopped on 25 November 1960 while travelling to visit their husbands in prison in Puerto Plata. The regime's secret police killed the sisters and their driver, then pushed their bodies in the car over a cliff to stage an accident. The cover-up convinced no one and the sisters became symbols of resistance. Trujillo was assassinated six months later. In 1999 the UN designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
